Getting Steady: Reducing Packet Loss
Q: How can I make the most of my current connection?
Destiny requires a steady internet connection. For that reason, we strongly recommend plugging in rather than using wireless connections. Wired connections help reduce packet loss, which is the most common cause of disconnections. While your networking setup may work flawlessly for other games, you may have problems staying connected to Destiny servers if you have issues with packet loss.

Q: What is packet loss?
Packet loss is when a chunk of information sent from one place to another goes missing. Sending information wirelessly can often increase the potential for packet loss, leading to disconnections. You may have the fastest connection on the block, but if your WiFi setup causes messages to be lost, even for a short time, you may get disconnected from our world.

While playing Destiny, it may be necessary to avoid file-sharing, video streaming, or other bandwidth-intensive tasks on any device connected to your network. This also includes multitasking on your console.

Q: What should I do if I can't plug in and need to use WiFi?
A properly configured modem and router is critical for getting the best WiFi connection possible. This can mean power-cycling or resetting your wireless router. Search online for your particular hardware setup to get the best troubleshooting steps.

You might need to contact your Network Administrator if you didn't set up the internet yourself or if you're connecting to a shared network such a University or Corporate network.
